Echoes of Divergence Writing Circles
Echoes of Divergence is a safe and supportive small group where you can explore and express your innermost thoughts and feelings, through the power of writing.
It is a space for those longing to give voice to the unspoken and to gently untangle some of the threads of their inner life. No prior writing experience is required—just an open heart and a desire to connect with yourself and others.
Echoes of Divergence has been created to be a kind and compassionate place, where each member of the group feels free to write from their unique self — authentically and bravely, without fear of judgment.
This group is not only about the writing you will create, but also the opportunity to feel deeply heard.
We will write without stopping:
We will start with an invitation to start writing and we will set the clock running. Then we will keep going, keep on writing, without stopping to edit or to plan or to seek ‘better’ words or more eloquent sentences. What you write doesn’t need to make sense, it doesn’t need to follow the rules of grammar. We will just keep our pens moving until the time is up.
This is ‘freewriting’ and the intention is that you can skip the thinking mind and access your experience more deeply. This can support trauma healing by allowing you to access intense emotions and process difficult experiences,
We will embrace the 4 C’s:
Banish the critic - this is the inner voice that tells us we are not ‘good-enough’ or that we have nothing to say that is worth anyone’s attention. There is no space for the critic here.
Connect with others - by sharing our inner worlds through our writing.
Take courage - to write honestly from our vulnerability
Have compassion - for yourself and for others
We will read our writing to each other:
Sharing our writing with each other by reading it aloud is encouraged, but never required. As we listen we will not be deciding whether the writing is ‘good’ or ‘bad’, but noticing how it feels to read it out loud and how it is to hear from our own and from others’ inner worlds.
🖋️ Have a taste of this process now:
Fetch your pen and paper and get comfortable somewhere, ready to write, have your pen poised to begin. You are going to write freely for exactly 5 minutes. Don’t worry about structure—just let the thought carry you. If you get stuck just write, “I’m stuck. I’m stuck. I’m stuck…” until something else comes. Don’t pause to think, just keep that pen writing.
🖋️ Look at the prompt, then start the timer.
Keep writing until the bell rings.
Now read what you have written out loud. Is there anything that surprises you? Interests you? Annoys you? Makes you sad? Delights you? Is your critic active? I would love you to send me a message with your comments about doing this exercise.
